The issue you'll have is the potential for the controller to over heat. All electronics need some air flow - this controller included. Sealing the controller inside of a plastic box will stop that air flow. The size of the box and amperage draw through the controoller will determine how much heat builds up. The number of LEDs and the color displayed (and brightness setting) will determine amperage draw. Using a relay would reduce the amperage significantly. The only way to know is to test it.
